Question from Vlad:
Do you believe this man? Apparently people say they knew him and that he is totally genuine. They say they went to school with him and he was a total atheist until this experience, where he wrote books about it and became a pastor, but I have my doubts. I feel he may have lied to make a profit.

Answer by SmartLX:
Bryan Melvin certainly made a profit whether or not he believes his own claims. It doesn’t cost much to put out a book with a Christian self-publishing company, and the above video is on sale too.
Atheists do sometimes convert to Christianity and other religions, so there’s really no problem with the idea that Melvin was once an atheist. What’s important is the reasons why people convert, and Melvin’s reason is a personal experience which he really has no way to establish as supernatural as opposed to generated by his own brain at some stage during his cholera episode. If it was real to him, and as intense as it sounds, objective examination of his own state of mind would have gone out of the window very quickly.

I know a baptist preacher that became religious after a plane crash he was in. He lost a few fingers, and amazingly that was about the extent of his injuries. He’s a good person, and truly believes he was “called” to become a preacher after his god sent him a message via the plane crash. I’ve tried to point to him that he probably suffered some mental trauma because of that experience, but he has always refused any kind of counseling. Most people I have known that went from atheism to religious experienced some kind of traumatic event, so the man in the YouTube video is a fairly common case I’d say. it’s interesting, though, how so many have had a brush with death (or injury or suffered a major loss) have a sudden change in their personality. It appears to me, in my opinion, that they’ve developed a coping mechanism to answer why that thing happened to them, and they spend the rest of their lives leaning on that mental crutch, instead of dealing with the event and moving on…
Atheism is a form of bigotry.
And your opinion is based off atheism + weaker than weak speculation.
Yes it is interesting how someone could experience something which is backed up by the direct evidence of a drastic change in how they live their lives.
In my “opinion” this is evidence the person KNOWS what happened was real.
In terms of “dealing with the event” your ignoramus advise is tantamount to “just deal with it and move on” says the ignoramus.
What is your foundation for dealing with an event that is real – yet shouldn’t be – yet you know it is real, and cannot believe its happening. Write it off? Pretend it never happened?
Oh I know …. Just Say “hey I’m an atheist so it can’t real”
I had something supernatural happen to me proving proof of another plane of existence beyond our earthly realm.
What I experienced was real. It should not have been real. Only one problem. It happened. It was real. I will not pretend it didn’t happen.
Now tell me it was my imagination or a freak occurrence or I was on drugs or emotionally disturbed drinking or hallucinated ..
Michael writes: [Atheism is a form of bigotry.]
Interesting charge, but rather empty in my opinion. If I was prone to bigotry, I wouldn’t have gone from a Christian to an atheist, because I would have been bigoted against atheists.
[Yes it is interesting how someone could experience something which is backed up by the direct evidence of a drastic change in how they live their lives.]
Personal anecdote is not “direct evidence” or anything. The fact that the preacher I mentioned was in a plane crash does not prove that gods exists, or that any of those gods wanted him to become a preacher and let him survive that plane crash. For all I know, he made that up because he realized that it was a good story and would make people want to come to his church and put money on the collection plate. That’s the problem with personal experience – it cannot be verified or validated by anyone else.
[In my “opinion” this is evidence the person KNOWS what happened was real.]
The way someone “knows” there is water at the horizon, and it turns out to be a mirage? Or the way someone “knows” an optical illusion is real, even though it isn’t? Did you know, Michael, that your vision is extremely bumpy when you are moving, yet you don’t see this in the finished product in your brain because your brain filters it out and makes it smooth?
Ever hear of the show “Brain Games”? You ought to watch it, you’d be amazed at the sheer number of ways your brain makes up for lack of evidence by filling stuff in for you, often based on past experiences or perceived expectations. There’s plenty of material in cognitive and neuroscience journals with lots of research and data that you can review in your own time. Don’t take my word for it, go look it up.
[What is your foundation for dealing with an event that is real – yet shouldn’t be – yet you know it is real, and cannot believe its happening. Write it off? Pretend it never happened?]
I try to figure out the reasons behind what I experienced. I look for evidence and data about the event, and use logic and reason to formulate an appropriate hypothesis. I try to stay come and reasonable in such situations. I investigate. I see if I can recreate the event based on things like the time it happened, if the sun was out or it was dark, etc.
I cannot honestly recall anything in my life that I cannot find a satisfactory answer for. That doesn’t mean that all things have satisfactory answers by the way, it just means that I don’t have experience with something that couldn’t be explained. I don’t ever claim that gods cannot possibly exist, because a person cannot prove a negative. They may indeed exist, and I just don’t have the evidence and data yet to confirm that. But at the same time, I also don’t credit unproven gods for things that happened just because I can’t explain something. Not knowing why something happened isn’t reason to automatically assume gods were involved. That’s the god of the gaps fallacy, and it’s illogical.
[What I experienced was real. It should not have been real. Only one problem. It happened. It was real. I will not pretend it didn’t happen. Now tell me it was my imagination or a freak occurrence or I was on drugs or emotionally disturbed drinking or hallucinated ..]
You’d have to share more about your experience before I could possibly comment on it. If you feel comfortable doing so, I look forward to reading it…
It must be difficult for you to be so simple-minded, and yet still try to use your ‘big words’ to explain things away. The experience that Mr. Melvin went through is proof to him, not to you. Just as you are completely ignorant of the facts, he was too before his incident. Your ability to hear and understand is up to you, and the truth sure, as heck, is not based on your opinion. It is simply your choice to NOT understand, and then potentially experience that which he tried to explain to you and everyone else. Then……. it will be too late, and you will have gone a long way in aiding the very thing you will complain about later. Not very bright…
Brian writes: [It must be difficult for you to be so simple-minded, and yet still try to use your ‘big words’ to explain things away.]
There aren’t big or little words Brian, there are just words that allow a person to express what they want to say with a higher degree of accuracy.
Brian writes: [The experience that Mr. Melvin went through is proof to him, not to you.]
You have zero ability to know if that is true or not. You can’t say with any degree of certainty that Mr Melvin is telling the truth or lying. You can’t say with any degree of certainty how accurate his memory of the event is compared to what actually happened. This is why personal experience cannot be considered empirical evidence or data. His claim of what happened cannot be verified or validated by anyone, ever.
Brian writes: [Just as you are completely ignorant of the facts, he was too before his incident.]
What facts? There is zero evidence for the existence of god creatures. You have presented any in your post naturally…
Brian writes: [Your ability to hear and understand is up to you, and the truth sure, as heck, is not based on your opinion.]
You are right. The truth is what it is. The only way to determine truth from falsehood is to rigorously examine data and evidence and make a thorough analysis of all information. Based on everything I’ve studied, read, discussed, and dissected, the claims of supernatural entities is pure nonsense.
I freely admit that I cannot claim, with 100% accuracy, that there is no such thing as a god being. There very well might be, and I don’t know about it because I haven’t come across the empirical data that will prove it exists. At the same time, I have yet to see ANY evidence for the existence of anything supernatural, whether it is Zeus or Odin or Osiris or Yahweh. So my stance is not because I haven’t tried, and tried sincerely for a long time. Nothing supports the claims of gods, and therefore there is no reason to believe in them.
Brian writes: [It is simply your choice to NOT understand, and then potentially experience that which he tried to explain to you and everyone else.]
It’s not a choice actually. Once your brain realizes that god beings make zero sense and are not necessary for anything, there’s nothing you can do about it.
Brian writes: [Then……. it will be too late, and you will have gone a long way in aiding the very thing you will complain about later. Not very bright…]
Silly threat. Are you scared that you won’t make Valhalla because you didn’t die in battle with honor? Of course not. You know why? Because you won’t believe in Norse mythology. Threats of it “being too late” for me mean nothing, it’s an empty warning.
Meanwhile, if you spend just 5 minutes of every day clasping your hands together talking to no one (what you cultists call praying) and spend 1.5 hours every Sunday going to, attending, and coming home from church, over the course of an 81 year life you lose a whole year of your life in a useless pursuit of nothing. Not very bright, eh?…
How is it that almost all NDE result In people believing in God? Some people have been dead for an hour or more and came back with all their organs and limbs healed. Dean Braxton. Medical Drs could not understand it. There are thousands of cases like that.
You or anyone reading this right now, you will still be yourself after you die, and you have a choice, right now on earth, of where you will go.
If at the end of the day none of you will believe it, then are you really ready to die? Would you really want to die right now and prove me wrong? I don’t want that for you! I am not afraid to die. Jesus Christ is the one and only way to salvation and true Love. He died so that you can be forgiven. He is your defense attorney when you stand in front of God. He loves you, more than we can comprehend, it breaks his heart that you don’t know the truth. I love you all and I pray you will understand what I am saying, even a little. Religion is garbage, I understand! Knowing Jesus and God is not religion, it’s knowing you have a Creator who cares about YOU and loves you so much that he sent his son to die for you, just so you can be with him forever.
You matter so much more than you know! YES YOU. ALL OF YOU.
Please forget all the lies you ever learned in church and consider just going online to Bible gateway and reading the new testament. Just a chapter of Matthew or something. Jesus was seriously cool, the old preachers in the church’s do him no justice. You will like him.
Atheism has nothing to do with bigotry. Atheism is simply a rejection of the unproven claim that god exist. YOU are an atheist with respect to all of the 10,000 or so gods posited throughout human history. A ‘complete’ atheist takes it one god further. So do you employ bigotry in your rejection of Allah, Thor, Zeus, etc.?
Those ‘gods’ never died for anyone’s else’s sins, nor did they rise from the dead and LIVE.
They are dead ‘gods’
Jesus Christ is the only one.
Listen..I hate religion just like you, but knowing your Creator is not religion. It’s love and salvation. Do you really want to die? If you do then why didn’t you already? If you don’t then don’t worry, you won’t! You have an opportunity, right now to decide whether you want to be with your Creator who loves you forever or if you want torment from the devil who invented and loves the lie of atheism.
You matter to God. I promise. He sent Jesus for all of you, because he loves YOU He made YOU and it breaks his heart that you don’t know. IF you forget the lies and BS from church and discover what HE is really about, it will change your life, you will be free.
Your creator is love and salvation? I find that claim nonsense. This same creator being you worship is supposed to be perfect, yet created a man and a woman who were imperfect. Then this perfect being had to drown the whole world because, golly gee, the world just didn’t end up the way it was supposed to. This flood killed newborn infants who could not possibly have been evil in any sense of the word (even though the creator being was only killing the wicked) and also killed the vast majority of non-evil animals. Very merciful, making all those squirrels and newborn infants and kangaroos (that had no way to reach the ark) die via the painful and terrifying method of drowning.
This same creator being lets you be born, through no choice of your own, and then saddles you with the sin of Adam, even though you had nothing to do with him eating something off a tree way back in the day. The creator being let’s you live in a world full of disease and pain and suffering because of what someone ELSE did (Adam and Eve), and they did it and “fell” despite being created by a perfect being.
But don’t forget, this being loves you unconditionally.
What a cosmic joke.
You’re statements are charges and accusations against God. They are based on your own ignorance. God knows all things. Past present and future. You are here for a purpose.
99.99% of atheists I’ve spoken with not only live in a state of constant willful denial against God’s existence – they have no theological or religious education studies.
Satan and God are “contesting” (warring) on this earth. We are in the middle of it. God allows this due to reasons beyond our understanding.
Prior to the flood Satan and his subordinates ruled and were worshiped as “gods”. The entire world was evil. And it deserved to be destroyed. Only 1 man and his family was found to be pure. This is similar to what happened in Sodom Gomorrah Zoara and the other 2 cities. Only Lot was found pure. One of a few abominations: first born baby’s were “cooked” in front of idols as culture practice. That is only 1 tiny drop in the bucket.
All infants who perished in the flood were born into evil and therefore had no choice but to become evil through socialization.
Elohim gives you laws to obey but ultimately is a God of choice – not tyranny. The animals who perished had been hybridized by the demonic as a way to mock God. This is again beyond your study level. This is discussed in Enoch and Jasher. Both books were also found with the Dead Sea Scrolls discovery.
You are human. You and I share in Adam’s spirit. You live in a state of willful sin against God. There is a reason you are here. In one of the ancient Jewish scripture cannon, Satan appears to Adam after engineering his fall from paradise while Adam is doing back braking labor tilling the soil. Adam gives Satan all his future prodigy as a “bond” to Elohim or Satan – pending the outcome of the contest between them. Whoever “wins” inherits all souls. Each soul is kingdom within itself. Again – this is beyond your understanding. At this point you are just bigoted atheist shaking his fist at the sky – with no credentials other than willful denial.
Pain and disease in this world is caused by Satan. Not God. God “allows” Satan to do certain things (see: Job) as part of this war (contest) being waged on this earth. I will not get into this. But like it or not – we are all part of this war. Pieces on a chess board.
This is all beyond your understanding. I have 20,000 hours of ancient study – you have 0. What you do have – is a stubborn willfully rebellious denial of God’s existence. One of many reasons why Jesus said:
“Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” -Bible KJV
Your comment is word play.
Many of those gods were “gods”. Yes you read that correctly. Others were man-made for religious political power and taxes or a combination thereof.
Ancient scripture seems to suggest many (not all) of those “god’s” were in fact – satan’s fallen angels and/or their demons. These beings posses supernatural powers. From the perspective of ancient mankind they would have easily appeared to be “gods”.
What did those “gods” do for anyone? NOTHING. They existed to accomplish their agenda on this earth then as now – as adversaries of God.
God sends rain on the just and the unjust. These “gods” took credit for whatever good God rained on mankind at that time as today – while propagating evil (demanding child sacrifice, ritual killings, temple sex, pedophilia, virgin daughters, taxes) to destroy society with evil, condition people, and pull people to hell.
Satan and his legions are adversaries of God committed to the destruction of humankind and the overthrow of God’s throne. It will never happen -but that is another subject.
These “gods” also soaked up worship by pretending to be gods. Why would these forces of darkness want to be worshiped as God? Scripture suggests Satan desired the worship due God and trusted in his own beauty over God.
Ezekiel 28:17 says: “Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.”
2 Corinthians 11:14 says: “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”
Isaiah 14:14 tells us Satan said “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High” and later fell from earth as lighting.
I’m not saying ALL these “gods” were fallen angels or demons. Some were. Others were simply idols.
The forces of darkness are at war with God for souls. There is a question being played out on this earth. God is truth. Truth has no fear of accusation. After this “question” is concluded and they lose their bet against God – these beings have only one destiny. In hell. Away from God forever. Knowing God’s love for us and their time on this earth is short (compared to their time in eternity) their goal is to pull as many people into hell with them as possible as a way to lash out at God. Something like this:
Khan from Star Trek:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYPsoxpt0BU
Again this is just my own personal working hypothesis. I am still studying. I credit Bryan Melvin and many others and various ancient scriptures I continue to read and keep an open mind.
I don’t presume to know anything for certain. Why there is evil on this earth. Why it’s allowed to exist etc. I don’t have the answers. Only God does.
The point is these gods did exist and were gods. There are reasons to history that go beyond your simple gotcha games word play.
Your inability to provide any empirical evidence or data for your claims is all anyone needs to know. Everything you wrote above Michael is your baseless opinion and nothing more. You don’t have the first clue if any gods ever existed, including the one you happen to worship. You also have no ability to say with ANY degree of certainty that anything supernatural exists.
You belief system is unsupported, like a house of cards.
If you need historical facts that the bible could be real, then search up Tacitus. He was a roman record keeper, romans were not in line with christianity, they hated christianity. Tacitcus still recorded Jesus’ death though, he recorded him being crucified, the darkness that came after and the events. Go search it up since you need data.
Notice how Atheists have no response to the documented historical evidence of Tacitus’s testimony of Jesus’s Christ’ brutal death and the God ordained events that occurred afterwards. Amen and thank you for posting this.
You shouldn’t verbally assault people. You sound very mean-spirited. Tim didn’t come across like that, or give a direct barb to anyone. An apology for your tone would in order. I’m sure you’re normally a kind man.
What a very condescending response there. Does it really hurt you in any way when your friend chooses religion or makes a lifestyle change after a traumatic event? If they are able to function normally, perhaps better with the aid of religion, how is that not effective coping?
What would you expect they do? Carry on after a near-death experience as normal? Would you? Or would you at least recognize as an atheist, life is short. Make the most of it, and don’t make it about yourself all the time. Regardless of if you remain atheist or not, respect how other people choose to cope.
Trish writes: [What a very condescending response there. Does it really hurt you in any way when your friend chooses religion or makes a lifestyle change after a traumatic event? If they are able to function normally, perhaps better with the aid of religion, how is that not effective coping?]
It hurts everyone Trish. Think about all the people that clasp their hands together talking to no one (praying) and then thinking that they’ve done something for the people that just suffered a natural disaster. They haven’t actually done a thing to help anyone, but they are satisfied that they did. Instead of donating time, or money, or clothes, or doing something actually useful, no one is assisted in their time of need. To make matters worse, he is now spreading that nonsense to other people. The last thing the human race needs is more irrational thinking…

Why would I respect am illogical response to trauma? That wouldn’t make me a very good friend. I’d rather help him that respect his poor choices…
If he did this for money after he was traumitised, I don’t think God will let him into paradise. he experienced something that only he can describe to the best of his ability. Who are you to judge him on his personal experiences and call him a liar. This is the devil’s work to destroy the innocent thoughts of men and woman like him who want to show the world what is happening and indeed we hear more and more stories. God is trying to enter everyone and he will and for what you accuse him of, I really hope he gets to you next!!!!!! I really do not believe someone would lie about something like this because if he or she does, it means they are getting in God’s way and God will indeed stop them in their tracks!!!!!!
I was a non-believer –or atheist, I guess. My parents were both atheists, as were my grandparents etc. way on back. I became a Christian when I met Christ — it was totally supernatural. I can’t explain and I’m not going to try, but whether Bryan made any $ or not, what happened to him was as he said. Again, I’m not going to explain as in my experience it doesn’t matter what I say, anyone can decide that I became a Christian for reasons that have nothing to do with Christ. After my experience (which involved no trauma whatsoever — it happened when I was quite young and my sister and I were sitting in the back of the car with my dad and stepmother in front — they had no idea anything was happening) I told my dad and he dismissed it as, “teenagers are always having religious experiences” and we never mentioned it again. He looked amused when I said grace (silently) before meals after that. My stepmother was/is strongly strongly opposed to anything Christian. So anyway just to say, it doesn’t have to have anything to do with trauma, although I guess you could say I was looking, i.e. searching. I suppose that could qualify as trauma if you want. It was over 45 years ago and it is still powerfully real in my memory. It was so amazing — just, well I can’t explain. And I’ve been shot down by enough atheists since that I’m not going to try. Thanks for letting me reply though — here.
I’m sorry you have been hurt by atheists that have “shot down” your statements. Perhaps they were just trying to present alternative explanations to you, and it came off the wrong way. Regardless, don’t ever be afraid to post here. LX is very respectful and runs a good site. I hope to see your comments in here more often.
He is telling the truth. After his experience his deeds and life drastically changed to match his newfound faith. God saved him for a reason. To minister to others about this place and save souls from going there.
Bryan doesn’t care about money. If you send him money he doesn’t follow up later and ask for more. He doesn’t ask for money and the profits from his book sales must be razor thin at best. The book is sold on Amazon (as far as I can tell) through a publisher. After paying them he gets practically nothing. Enough to pay basics and fund his ministry trips and outreach. Look at his website. Very simple. Low cost. Nothing fancy.
I know for a fact Bryan doesn’t care about money. This isn’t a business for him. He’s not a liar. He wants to save as many people as possible from going this place. This has been proven through his actions.
“You’d have to share more about your experience before I could possibly comment on it. If you feel comfortable doing so, I look forward to reading it…”
Why? You already know everything. So what’s the point? You have a construct in your mind. Nothing I say will change it. If you can’t see it in a laboratory under a microscope: it doesn’t exist.
Have you ever loved someone? Prove it.
You see? There is no point. Your mind is already made up.
Michael, you can empirically prove love. It’s rather easy to do…
Empirically? Please prove you felt love for someone (insert X individual here) 5 years ago.
Please provide:
1) Documentation
2) Lab Reports
3) Any other evidence
You cannot. And even if you could. I would just deny it because love doesn’t exist. Because I said so. And if you cannot provide evidence that love is real.
Do you see how ridiculas that sounds ? It’s exactly the position Atheists take on God. Except you know in your conscience God is real. Because God placed eternity in the hearts of mankind. You know God is real and you can feel it mentally and spiritually. That God exists is absolutely without question. You know this in your heart and you deny it. Because you are upset at God. So you fix a mental construct in your head. Then you shake your fist at the sky and yell that God doesn’t exist. That is what atheism is. Denial.
Every atheist who hears Bryan’s story is now presented with his own self, like Luke Skywalker, who was warned not to take a weapon with him into the Garden of Choice. Bryan said to his Saviour, “You are an hallucination!” Does any atheist here know what happened next? If not, you have insufficient information to speak further. Go back and watch his whole account, then make your answer. Bryan was most obviously an atheist too at that point. Face your fears of the numinous, people, and let light shine on Pride and the fruits of that Tree…
There are reams worth of material at this website about NDEs and why they are unreliable. Why don’t you address some of those points? Instead, you’ve shown up and made bland general statements that offer no detail or empirical data to discuss. If you wanted to preach, you failed. If you want to have a conversation about something, then I recommend getting specific and enumerating your facts so that others can comment on them…
Ha ha ha ha …
You talk about empirical evidence then claim NDE’s are unreliable based on “reams worth of material” while ignoring the drastic changes these people made in their lives after the NDE.
An stanch atheist with a enviable guaranteed career and a six figure salary does not wake up from his deathbed and
1) Instantly convert Christianity
2) Give up his high paying salary
3) Give up a contract for 10 years of job security
To struggle to pay bills as a poor missionary … talking with people on the street spreading the word of God writing and speaking about his experience because of an “unreliable” experience.
ha ha ha ha … “reams worth of material”
ha ha ha ha ha
Atheists live in denial because they are angry at God.
It doesn’t matter what proof you bring to the table. They will always deny it. The best you can do is pray for them and hope they can find a moment in their lives where a sliver of truth appears.
Our soul is eternal and continues after we die. There are other dimensions of time and space that exist outside our 5 senses. I pray that someday these people open the door to God before it’s too late. Jesus took the death upon himself that WE DESERVE for our transgressions against the most high.
You have a chance to go to heaven after you die. But you must be cleansed and corrected by God in order to entry heaven or in your current spiritual form you will pollute it. And in order to be cleansed and corrected you must give your consent.
Pray and give your soul to God
Acknowledge his son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to earth to die a brutal death on the cross because of YOU.
Confess and repent of your sins in the name of Jesus Christ.
Get baptized.
Refrain from sinning as best you are able.
Pray to God communicate and keep in touch and faith.
You and I will sin and have problems because we exist in a fallen state. The point is to keep trying as best we are able.
But you need to get over your constructs and prejudices to proceed beyond step 1. When you’re so fixated on “denying denying denying” – that is unhealthy skepticism taken to extremes. You cannot get anywhere in life in this kind of state. No matter what it is (God, relationships with the opposite sex, business inventions, athletics, you name it) you cannot get anywhere in life living in a predetermined fixed state of denial.
You need to find the root cause of denying God AKA Atheism. You are upset at God for a reason. In your heart of hearts deep in your spirit: you know God exists.
There is a reason or reasons you are feeling upset or angry at God. And that reason is why you are an Atheist.
My Christian friends who commented above have a good command of English as well as a wonderful knowledge of God–plus an understanding of the so-called atheists they contend with. I have been helped by your comments, friends–despite that I am an ex-missionary to Thailand (27 years) and Cambodia (25)–and am now over 80 years old. Hallelujah!!!
Shut your mouth Michael. We don’t need your Christian preachings here. I’ve yet to see any evidence to support your claims. Bryan Melvin made money of his book. Thats a fact. Your comments annoy me.
John, what a lot of “sour grapes!”
I pray for the lost and unbelievers. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. We’re not perfect as Christians but we have a savior who wash us of our sins through is blood. Please pray for salvation and faith.
Funny that Jesus, who is also god, had no problem punishing all of us when Adam and Eve ate off that tree. I didn’t take a bite, and neither did you, yet all of us are being punished because of what we did. Your god has punished literally every single human being since Adam and Eve for something they had nothing to do with. That is the single greatest wrongdoing in all of human history….
